BTEC Construction
The Construction workshop was established in 2013 by Mr Inman under the guidance of Mr South (Deputy Headteacher at that time) to provide practical skill-based learning and qualifications to help learners develop their personal and social skills needed to help them to progress to independent living, future employment or further vocational study. All units are internally assessed.
The Construction workshop has changed over the years and the department has strengthened its services and pupil numbers to provide many Construction based projects. Many of these projects will require the use of hand tools as a form of learning rather than the use of machines. The main qualification taught is a BTEC Level 1 Award in Construction, if doing a 1 year course (7 units) or a BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Construction (18 units) if doing a 2 year course.
Even if students choose not to do a qualification, it is expected that pupils will pick up skills to carry out work on their own properties one day, to save money and take pride in their achievements.
The units taught include Plumbing, bricklaying, making minor repairs on a home. Additional units which are a requirement of the BTEC program include A1 being organized and A2 Developing a personal progression plan.
Students at the end of year 11 have the opportunity of completing a Level 1 Health and Safety in the Construction environment qualification. On completion they are then allowed to do the CSCS Labour card test.
